Baumwipfelpfad Steigerwald: German Treetop Tower

The Baumwipfelpfad in the Steigerwald region in Southern Germany is a boardwalk that winds through the treetops and then around a circular tower until you are standing 42 meters (138 feet) high looking over the landscape. Along the way there are exhibits, animals, and activity stations.

It’s a great day trip to take with kids because not only are there a lot of fun things to keep them entertained, but the boardwalk and platforms are enclosed and we felt very safe with the heights and able to keep our kids moving.

This Baumwipfelpfad would make a good day trip from nearby cities such as Nürnberg, Würzburg, Bamberg, or Schweinfurt. We also thought the entrance prices were very reasonable.

Boardwalk in the Trees

The boardwalk was nice and wide so we could push our little one in the stroller. The trees are incredibly tall and looking down you are immediately aware of how high up you are, even before heading up the tower itself.

Looking out into the trees you see them swaying back and forth. The path is incredibly well constructed and feels very sturdy.

Along the way there were several exhibits that told us about the flora and fauna, the boardwalk itself, forest conservation, controlled tree cutting, and the impact of fire. When we visited there was also a treetop app for free download with their free WiFi to guide your visit.

There were also activity stations where you could climb into a metal cage or walk over boards that moved as you stepped on them.

There were places to watch live footage where cameras had been placed in boxes for bird and squirrel nests. You could buy and feed deer through tubes down to their trough below the boardwalk. Bring Euro coins for this. We got lucky and they were being fed as we arrived.

Tower to the Sky

The base of the tower is a good spot to pause and rest for a moment. This is where we had a snack break for our kids.

There is a tree growing in the center of the tower. It will be neat to see how big it gets over the years and fills the space.

Then around and around we went until we reached the top of the tower. The grade is gentle so it isn’t too strenuous. It is fun to position yourself across the tower from your friends or family and see them from that perspective. It makes for great pictures too!

At the top you get some amazing views and text around the tower points you toward what direction and cities you are looking.

Playground & Petting Zoo

Once you exit the Baumwipfelpfad path, there is a great little playground with sandbox and toys, swings, and hammocks for little ones to play and adults to relax.

There is also a petting zoo with goats and bunnies. Be prepared to spend some time here as well because what kid can resist this!

Have Lunch On Site

Once we were done there we checked out the gift shop and had a nice lunch. You can have a hot meal or cold lunch at their kiosk.

They have both indoor and outdoor seating where you can eat while watching the kids play at the adjacent playground.

Outdoor Ball Track

Though this wasn’t built yet when we visited, they now have an outdoor ball track. If you have change, you can buy a wooden ball that fits in the track. Your kids can then let is roll down three separate wooden paths. I think we’ll have to visit again just to try this out!

We would definitely recommend you add this to your next trip to the area. If you don’t find yourself close to this particular Baumwipfelpfad in the Steigerwald, search for others around Germany such as in the Schwarzwald, Saarschleife, Harz, or Bavarian Forest.
