What Is Fulltime RVing Really Like? A Day In The Life

Recently, we realized most of our content is either a some sort of project, or an outdoor adventure. Considering our name, that’s probably pretty fitting.

However, it really isn’t a complete picture of what RV life is like. Most days are actually spent at our campsite. Whether that be in an actual campground, or boondocking, on most days we have to get everyday “life stuff” done too.

We’ll take you through a regular day for us as we show you what day to day looks like for a family of four in an RV.

Fulltime RVing Isn’t Always An Adventure

Fulltime RVing

Maybe it’s because we have slowed down a little since we started fulltime RVing several years ago. It is really common for new full-timers to drive a lot of miles and see a ton of sites in their first year. We have found that because it’s so much work to pack-up and move the RV as well as setup the RV at new sites, we like to stay in a location for at least 2 weeks at a time. If we can help it!

In that time, we typically go see the local sites for during 2 or 3 of those days. The rest of that time is regular life. Making food, cleaning up, doing homeschool, and getting work accomplished. We have never really been morning people. Our days tend to start around 8 or 9 and we’re frequently up pretty late.

Everyday Life In Many Places

Be a tourist or just hang out at the campground. Visit a new-to-you restaurant, or grill out at home. Seek solitude or meet like-minded friends. The in-between time will still have laundry, trips to the grocery store, vehicle maintenance, and other chores that need to be done. Chances are you will be doing those things in a variety of places throughout the year.

That’s the real beauty of fulltime RVing, you can move as fast or as slow as you want! If your work is flexible, you can also plan to visit the tourist attractions when they are less crowded which is nice.

RV Day to Day Video Transcript

Today’s video is gonna be a little bit of a different kind for us today. We’re obviously not all ready to go, not out and about adventuring, Kevin has no RV project that he’s planning to do today. It’s just gonna be day-to-day life in the campground.

Full-time RVing is also life like normal. We’re not always out adventuring. This is more normal than any other day really. So we’re gonna take you along and show you what it’s like. So we were talking and we recognized that we don’t really show you into our day-to-day.

Today is about RV Life

Our videos are very activity and destination focused, but we want to show you more about what it’s like living in an RV, give you some insight into our family. So we hope a little glimpse of that today will be interesting for you all.

And, every day varies but we’re just going to show you some things that are pretty common to our day to day. I think these types of videos usually start with an alarm going off and people getting out of bed. Yeah that’s not really us. My brain is not functioning very well first thing out of bed and you guys just really don’t want to see that.

At this point where we’re talking to you here we’ve been up for about an hour. Gives me a little bit of time to get moving. We typically get up when the kids wake us up. We get them down. We come down, turn the lights on, open up some windows.

Today I had to put the dehumidifier away because we’re near the Oregon coast and it’s a little bit humid here. Just regular morning stuff but the theme is that the kids wake us up and they usually need us right away. If the kids jump into playing right away like they are this morning then sometimes we have a little time to ourselves. But the most important thing when we get out of bed is coffee.

Next we pretty much jump straight into breakfast. Yeah typically the first thing we hear in the morning isn’t like “I want to come down” or anything. It’s “I’m hungry.” Breakfast for us typically is overnight oats. We make them the night before. Or Kevin makes a shake for us. Just things that are easy, convenient, that’s kind of the theme of our breakfasts. If we’re feeling more ambitious, we have more time, we might do pancakes, eggs. It’s not as common. Yeah.

Getting Ready For The Day

Then if we’re really on the ball, people start getting ready for the day. But, we’re gonna be real here and the truth is we stay in our pajamas probably way too long most days. If there are no demands on us going out anywhere, we kind of stay in our pajamas until we’re ready to take the kids out.

But since we’re filming today we’re gonna make getting the kids ready the next priority. So we each have to take turns in the bathroom. And with only one of those in the rig, that can be a little bit challenging. Just adds to the theme that getting ready in this household can take a while.

Working and Homeschool

While Christine homeschools the kids it gives me a chance to get some work done during the day. Depending on what we need to get done we will switch out. One of us is always watching the kids.

If you saw our very first video then you’ll know that Christine worked for her company remotely for many years. More recently we are trying to focus on our own thing. The remote work was really nice for a long time. We’re trying to focus on generating our own income now. We have the Never Stop Adventuring blog and this YouTube channel. And we also do freelance travel writing.

Some form of homeschooling is also part of our day. It looks different almost every day because we do have a more structured curriculum here that we use but because our kids are so young it doesn’t involve anything super complicated or difficult. But we do have some reading, some basic worksheets, and then a lot of fun stuff that we get to do.

So three to five days a week I’d say, depending, we do something like this. And on days we are out exploring, I mean that’s home school. They learn as they experience. So we’re gonna do a little bit of that right now.

Regular RV life: the uh internet box on the roof is out so I’m gonna go climb up on the roof and fix that. Because there’s no working until that’s taken care of. Nope. At some point we get a lunch in. It’s usually dictated by little bellies getting hungry. After lunch we’re gonna head outside.

Heading Outside

Well we finally made it outside. We have a really nice campsite right here behind us. That’s not always the case but luckily we usually find or pick some pretty good ones. And we come out, we enjoy it with the kids, they get to play, we get to relax.

But it’s even better if it’s nice to walk around the campground, if there are trails, if there’s a playground. So that’s what we’re gonna go do now. It’s really nice when there’s a good playground at a campground. If we would let them the kids would probably spend the entire day here.

Heading To The Beach!

So as you saw from the signs, right from the campground is a little trail that takes us through the woods, across the road, and to the beach. That’s always really nice when you have something like that nearby.

Which is why we love camping at state parks and other places where you’re in a nice campground plus you have the activity, the nature to explore right there. So that makes this campsite really cool. This has been really nice.

We’ve been coming down here maybe two or three times a week. Or more. Or more. Some days the weather hasn’t been that great and we’ve been having a pajama day inside but today is gorgeous. The beach is awesome. We love the Pacific Northwest coastline. This has been perfect. So part of any good hanging around the campground day is getting outside whether that’s at our campsite or for a little walk. This is icing on the cake. Absolutely.

Campfires Every Night?

Well we spent longer at the beach than we expected to. It was just so much fun. And we weren’t planning on having a fire. Honestly, we don’t do this as often as you might think. Probably not as often as we should. Right. If you are a fellow RVer, you know what we’re talking about. And if you are not an RVer, I feel like there’s always that perception that you’re going to have a ton of campfires, you’re going to eat s’mores every night.

But being kind of chilled from the beach, we walked by and we thought, ooh, a warm fire might be a nice idea. So the sun is almost completely set already but it’s really only five o’clock. I think we’re just gonna sit out here and warm up by the fire a little bit and then head in and have dinner.

Dinner

So we came inside. I’m working on dinner. Christine is taking a turn up working right now. Oftentimes it’s actually both of us working on dinner together but since we stayed out so late this evening we thought Christine would have a chance to work while I work on dinner.

Actually dinner is almost ready so I am going to go up and check on what Christine is up to. Dinner’s almost ready. All right. I’ll do a couple more things and I’ll come down. Bye. Bye.

Dinner is served. Nothing really that fancy it’s, leftovers. For being a day just hanging around the RV and around the campground, I’m surprisingly worn out. Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Just trying to showcase all of this and and live like a normal day has been a lot more tiring than I expected it to be. Yes. We prayed. You can eat. Yes.

A regular day can be busy and tiring and crazy even if we’re just around here. But I feel like today with the filming and really just thinking through what can we show, what do we do on a regular day…

I don’t think we typically fit all of that into one day, sometimes. Sometimes we do. Sometimes we don’t. You know we just kind of have to pick and choose what works and what flows with the day. And then today we spent a lot of time at the beach and that was really nice. It’s been good.

Let’s eat and get a little extra energy for the last part of the evening. Stick with us. We’re almost there. We have a few more things to show you.

Beginning The Nightshift

Shh, the kids are asleep in their beds in the loft. The kids are asleep and up till a minute ago Christine was too and if she hadn’t then I most definitely would have because we typically take turns putting them to bed. And sometimes if it’s been a long day, yes, you can fall asleep up there quite easily.

But now it is time to do a little more work. This is what we refer to as the night shift and it’s time when we get to sit together and collaborate and get some more work done in our RV office for a few more hours. So it’s really productive because there aren’t any distractions. And we find ourselves working um in the evenings quite frequently but not all the time. So sometimes we’ll watch a movie or we’ll just relax and hang out.

We hope you’ve enjoyed coming along with us and seeing what it’s like for our family on a regular day in the RV life, in the campground when we’re not adventuring, when we’re not doing an RV project. What does the full-time RV life look like? Thanks for watching. See you next time. Bye. Bye.
